The Rock river Road Runners
are in our third year of offering scholarships to deserving local runners.
The first year we offered only one $500 scholarship. In the second year, we
offered two $500 and in 2010 two $400. The winners have been from
Newman, Sterling, Fulton, and Eastland. Forms are given to the schools in
towns which our Rock River Road Runners members live. The forms tell more
about the requirements for applying. We look for kids who have running as
part of their lives and believe in lifelong fitness. In other words, you
don’t have to be a star track athlete to receive these scholarships. However,
sometimes they are. The scholarship committee
conducts several fundraisers during the year. We have already completed a
trail clean up behind Westwood and our fun Glitz and Glamour Run. We are on
our way to having two $500 by next spring (2011).
The committee and executive board members meet and read through the
applications. We use a number system to rate each applicant in several
categories. We crunch the numbers and come up with the recipients. Someone
from the board or committee tries to present the scholarship at the respective
winners’ awards ceremonies. |
